Pickering writes from the General Post Office to John Ward Gilman, postmaster at Exeter. In part: “Inclosed is the copy of a letter to the Postmaster at Newbury Port, an attentive perusal of which will show what I wish you to have done, for the letter accommodation of the Exeter mail. I have referred to you, the making the provision of saddle bags, locks, and keys, because your place is so interested in the measure, which I wish to have carried into effect without delay….” Intersecting folds (touching signature) a few repaired tears and small losses (one affecting date) and mild toning and soiling, otherwise fine condition.
