A stalwart of the Union Army, General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820–1891) was among the most celebrated of Lincoln’s soldiers. Indeed, Sherman enjoyed massive popularity, even long after his wartime heroics. The former commanding general acknowledged his wide-ranging esteem, and like most prominent men of his era, Sherman found it incumbent upon himself to carry calling cards. Here offered is one such example that was penned by the Civil War luminary himself. On one side, the cream-colored relic displays the neatly printed, “W. T. Sherman—General—New York.” On the back, his black fountain pen inscription reads, “W. T. Sherman, General, 1888.” Impressively, Sherman’s late-1800s penning remains dark and vivid. The 3.5 x 2 relic exhibits a few tiny areas of spotting, yet is otherwise in fine condition. RRAuction COA.
