Grant appoints Seaton Schroeder as an Ensign in the Navy, beginning an illustrious naval career

DS as president, one page, 15 x 17.5, July 22, 1869. President Grant appoints Seaton Schroeder to the rank of “Ensign in the Navy.” Signed at the conclusion by Grant, and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy George Robeson. Double suede matted and framed with a full-length portrait of Grant, to an overall size of 37 x 29. Seaton Schroeder (1849–1922) would eventually become an admiral in the United States Navy. After specializing in hydrographic duties for 11 years, he spent two years in the Office of Naval Intelligence where he helped develop the Driggs-Schroeder rapid-fire gun. Following his appointment as executive officer of the battleship Massachusetts, he participated in the American blockade of Santiago, Cuba, during the Spanish-American War. He was appointed Naval governor of Guam on July 19, 1900, and there commanded the Yosemite and later, the Brutus. On May 1, 1903, Schroeder became Chief Intelligence Officer of the Navy. In fine condition, with Grant’s signature a couple of shades light, but completely legible. JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA. Oversized.
