Description

Abigail Adams

Wife of John Adams (1744-1818), the second President of the United States, and mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth, and is regarded as the first Second Lady of the United States and the second First Lady of the United States though the terms were not coined until after her death. Scarce partial ALS signed “A. A.,” one page, 8 x 2.5, no date. Adams writes in full: “Let me hear from you every week either of William or direct, I shall not feel at my ease unless you do.” Although the recipient of the letter is unknown, Adams may be writing to Nancy Greenleaf Cranch, wife of her nephew William Cranch. While serving as First Lady, Abigail pushed her husband to find an appointment for William. President Adams named William a D.C. circuit court judge (one of his falsely termed ‘midnight judges’) starting him on a 50 year career of service. A bisecting vertical fold, and some scattered light toning and soiling, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
