Description

Pardoning a fifteen-year Army veteran

Manuscript DS as president, one page both sides, 10.5 x 16.5, April 16, 1867. A pardon for Charles Smith, “convicted of larceny and sentenced to one year’s imprisonment,” in light of “his age, infirmities, and fifteen years service in the United States Army….” The embossed paper seal remains intact on the reverse. Accompanied by a vintage transcript and catalogue description from well-known dealer John Heise. Intersecting folds (partial separations archivally reinforced from reverse; vertical fold to first name), a hint of mild soiling (tiny paperclip stain to top edge), and a few wrinkles, otherwise fine, bright condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
