Signing a ship’s papers for a whaling voyage

Partly printed DS, signed “R. B. Hayes” as president, one page, 21.75 x 16.75, April 11, 1881. A four-language ship’s papers issued to Joshua G. Baker, “master or commander of the bark called Reindeer … lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for the Atlantic Ocean, and laden with Provisions, Stores, and Utensils for a whaling voyage.” Countersigned by Wm. M. Evarts as secretary of state. In fair condition, with intersecting folds (chips, holes, and partial separations, the last touching a few letters of signature; early reinforcements and repairs to reverse; discoloration from tape showing through behind signature), allover toning, and scattered staining.
