Distinguished American poet (1807–1882) who produced such timeless classics as “Paul Revere’s Ride,” “The Song of Hiawatha,” and “Evangeline.” Among other distinctions, Longfellow was the first American honored with a sculpted likeness in the Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey. ALS signed “Henry W. Longfellow,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, October 21, 1840. Longfellow writes from Cambridge to W. F. M. Van Sicklen at the University of Vermont in Burlington. In full: “I have had the pleasure of receiving your favor of the 15, informing me of my election as an honorary member of the University Institute. I take an early opportunity to thank the society for this testimony of their regard, and to signify my acceptance of the honor they have conferred upon me….” The adjacent leaf bears the address panel in Longfellow’s hand. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (vertical fold to last name; a few short edge separations), wrinkling, and mild scattered soiling and toning. The writing is dark and clear throughout.
