Description

Signing his own “Gettysburg Address”

Vintage TQS on a lightly lined 5.5 x 8.5 sheet, signed in ink “I approve that sentiment, Herbert Hoover.” An excerpt from the Memorial Day address that Hoover delivered at Gettysburg in 1930. In part: “To cherish religious faith, and the tolerance of all faiths; to reflect into every aspect of public life the spirit of charity, the practice of forbearance, and the restraint of passion while reason seeks the way; to lay aside blind prejudice and follow knowledge; to pursue diligently the common welfare, and find within its boundaries our private benefit…. To face with courage and confident expectation the task set before us—these are the paths of true glory for this nation.” Accompanied by a 1950s dealer’s receipt and related letter to Henry Luhrs, owner of the famed Lincoln Library collection in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. In fine condition, with small paperclip impression and faint intersecting folds (vertical fold through signature). Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
