Description

Prominent American politician (1782–1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. ALS signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page both sides, 4.25 x 7, March 29, 1848. Calhoun writes from the Senate chamber to a gentleman. In part: “This will be delivered to you by Wm. Wilkins G—, to whom I take pleasure in introducing you. Mr. G— is of Baltimore and is the son of one of the most intelligent & respectable citizens of the place…. I am not personally acquainted with the son, but am informed that he is very intelligent….” Faint show-through of ink and a few tiny edge separations, otherwise fine, clean condition. R&R COA.
