Partly printed DS, filled out by Monroe as Governor of Virginia and signed “Jas. Monroe” and (in the body) “James Monroe,” one page, 8 x 9, November 7, 1801. An appointment for James Payne as sheriff of Fluvanna County. A wax and paper seal remains intact at lower left. Horiztonal folds (one though “James Monroe”; small holes and partial separations elsewhere, some repaired from reverse), light show-through from docket to reverse, and mild scattered toning and wrinkling, otherwise fine condition.
