Description

Distinguished statesman (1777–1852), longtime member of Congress, and three-time presidential candidate who became known as the “Great Compromiser” for his central role in the brokering of hot-button, slavery-related issues prior to the Civil War. Franking signature, “Free, H. Clay,” on a slightly irregular 5.5 x 3.25 mailing panel addressed in his hand to John Lowrey in Princeton, New Jersey, and bearing Washington D. C. and “FREE” postmarks. Light vertical fold and a touch of mild scattered toning, soiling, and faint staining, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
