Partly printed DS, signed as President of the Continental Congress, one page, 11.5 x 9.25, January 1, 1776. An appointment for Samuel Loring as “Second Lieutenant of Captain Samuel Bradford’s Company with 23 Regiment of foot commanded by Colonel John Bailey.” Countersigned “Cha. Thomson, Secy.” Thomson (1729–1824) served as Secretary of the Continental Congress for its entire existence, from 1774 to 1789. A patriot, scholar, and diplomat, Thomson was also the person who personally carried the news to George Washington that he had been elected America’s first president in 1789. Matted and framed to an overall size of 21 x 18.75. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (associated tiny holes and chips; partial and complete separations; vertical fold through “Ha”), small area of ink erosion to one stroke of “H,” toning, and scattered faint staining.
