TLS signed “T. Roosevelt,” one page, 6.5 x 7.25, personal The Outlook letterhead, June 27, 1912. Roosevelt writes to [Paul V.] Janis, Chairman of the Progressive Party Club of St. Louis and Missouri. In full: “I want to thank you and Mr. Lewis personally for what you have done. It is just fine. I will send on your telegram at once to Senator Dixon.” A New York Times article of the same day (a copy of which is included) explains that the Progressive Club “has assured Theodore Roosevelt of its allegiance to him, and informed him by telegraph that it will soon be ready to co-operate with his organization…. The temporary organization announces that it has under consideration a mass meeting … for all voters, regardless of past political affiliations, who believe the time has arrived for the launching of a new political party….” Accompanied by a later printing of a photo of the Progressive Party’s 1912 nominating convention, as well as handwritten resolution by Archibald Peabody Gardner expressing the Boston City Club’s support for Roosevelt’s nomination in 1916. In good to very good condition, with heavy toning, scattered staining (slightly touching one letter of last name), and a few wrinkles. The signature is dark and clear.
