Description

INTO THE SUNSET: WAYNE writes to his final interviewer: “I have an Army film to narrate, a Seabees film to narrate”

TLS, one page, 6 x 8.25, June 21, 1977. Wayne writes to Bill Kelly. In part: “You have contacted me at the worst time possible as far as my schedule is concerned. During the next two weeks, I have an Army film to narrate, a Seabees film to narrate, a couple of radio tapes, three dinners to attend, and some business meetings. The day after the last business meeting, we are leaving for the Pacific Northwest for a vacation, which I will certainly need. It is just impossible now for me to say when we can get together….” The original recipient of the letter, Bill Kelly, was a prolific journalist and author who, after several attempts, was finally granted an interview with Wayne on August 8, 1978; Wayne died on June 11 of the following year. The interview, Wayne’s last, was first published in Real West magazine in March 1979 and, later, in Kelly’s book/CD Empty Saddles. Accompanied by a CD/CD ROM set that includes an audio recording of the interview, a transcript of the interview, and photos taken at Wayne’s home at the time of the interview; also included are reprints of four of the photos. In fine condition. PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
