Description

FISTFUL OF DOLLARS: BRUCE LEE signs a Jun Fan Gung Fu rent check

Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute business check, 6.5 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Lee, payable to John Chorbajian for $135.00, November 19, 1964. In rejecting many components of traditional martial arts and adopting a more inclusive, holistic approach, Lee developed a system he originally called “Jun Fan Gung Fu,” a name that incorporated the Chinese form of his own name, Lee Jun Fan. Lee summed up the underlying philosophy of his style, later renamed Jeet Kun Do (“The Way of the Intercepting Fist”), as “simply the direct expression of one’s feelings with the minimum of movements and energy.” Lee operated a number of schools espousing his methods until 1971, though he permitted his students to carry on his teachings on a private basis. Lee’s check was evidently a rent payment for his martial arts school. The check is encapsulated in a plastic PSA/DNA authentication holder bearing the grade “Mint 9.” In fine to very fine condition, with cancellation holes to upper portion of check, and slight show-through from a stamp on reverse under signature. A seldom-seen Lee format with a direct association to his fabled martial arts career! PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
