Description

McCarthyism and the ‘Red Scare’: “The Committee staff are continuing…an attempt to uncover a witness that will testify that Mrs. Moss attended Communist party meetings.”

TLS signed at the top “R. F. K.,” one page, 8 x 10.5, United States Senate, Committee on Government Operations letterhead, April 8, 1954. Important confidential letter sent from Kennedy to Senator John L. McClellan. In part, “I am enclosing a copy of a memorandum prepared by a member of the staff of the Subcommittee…As you undoubtedly remember it was stated that this witness would corroborate the testimony of Mrs. Mary Markward. However the interview that Mr. Hawkins and I had with Mrs. Branca shows clearly that Mrs. Branca was in no position to do this. She further told me that she informed the FBI a couple of days after her appearance before Senator McCarthy on February 24, 1954, that she was mistaken when she told the Committee that she knew Mrs. Moss as a member of the Northeast Club of the Communist Party. The Committee staff are continuing to interview other members of the Northeast Club of 1943-44 in an attempt to uncover a witness that will testify that Mrs. Moss attended Communist party meetings or was in other ways active in the party.” Accompanied by two original glossy wire photos of McCarthy and Kennedy, originally acquired from the San Francisco Examiner. The mentioned memorandum is also included. In fine overall condition. R&R COA.
