Description

Unsuitable for the opera stage: “Too symphonic and not dramatic enough”

Italian composer (1813–1901) who takes a place among the most influential figures in the history of opera, and whose works, including such classics as Rigoletto, La Traviata, and Aïda, are a cornerstone of the genre. ALS in Italian, signed “G. Verdi,” one page, 4.25 x 7, November 22, 1894. Verdi disappoints a prospective collaborator. In full (translated): “I am returning your libretto Tartini which I read with interest. There are good things in it, but in my opinion it is too symphonic and not dramatic enough….” Intersecting mailing folds and uniform overall toning from previous framing, otherwise fine, clean condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
