Holmes himself would eventually earn a place among the most familiar and durable characters in the annals of English literature, and his exploits would inspire countless incarnations on stage and screen. In full: “Your cabled offer is a generous one but alas I could not deliver the goods—not up to a decent sample anyhow. You can well understand that we are entirely preoccupied at present and that a great deal of one’s time goes in war work of one form or another. Thank you none the less….” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Doyle’s hand and an original cabinet photo. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (vertical fold to “C”), scattered light soiling, and light handling wear with a few small edge tears to letter, and light soiling to photo with a few edge losses to mount.
