Description

Ten-grand gesture: Nine years to the day before he would make the decision to resign, NIXON writes himself a check for $10,000

Personal check, 6 x 2.5, filled out in type and signed by Nixon as “Richard M. Nixon,” payable to himself for $10,000, August 6, 1965. Nixon has also endorsed on the reverse, “For deposit only, Richard M. Nixon.” The date August 6 would come to occupy a place of central significance in the Nixon saga. Exactly nine years later, on August 6, 1974, Nixon made the decision to resign following the revelation of the contents of the infamous “smoking gun” Watergate tape to members of Congress. It is documented that, on that date, Nixon made handwritten notes on a sheet headed “Resignation Speech” for the use of his speechwriter. Two days later, on August 8, Nixon bid farewell to the presidency—and ensured himself a place among the most reviled and controversial figures in the history of American politics. Faint vertical fold, and usual punch cancellations and bank stamps (the latter touching a few letters of endorsement), otherwise fine condition. Rare and remarkable! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
