Partly printed DS, one page on vellum, 14.75 x 18.25, September 9, 1861. A commission for John S. Poland as second lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Infantry. Poland (1836–1898) fought at Bull Run, Yorktown, Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and elsewhere; as a result of his outstanding service, he was breveted a lieutenant colonel at Chancellorsville. His New York Times obituary of August 9, 1898 (a copy of which is included) notes that he “was a very able and zealous officer and conscientious in the discharge of every duty. His standing in the army was of the highest, his fellow-officers considering him possessed of a high order of ability and discretion, specially adapting him to perform important duties requiring capacity, professional zeal, and good judgment.” Countersigned by Simon Cameron as secretary of war. Matted and framed with a photo to an overall size of 33 x 26. Intersecting folds (horizontal fold lightly touching signature), some light soiling and wrinkling, and ink very slightly light, otherwise fine condition.
