The best-known and most controversial legacy of his brief tenure was the lifetime baseball ban imposed on Pete Rose as the result of Rose’s gambling activities. Giamatti writes to Jack Lang, Secretary-Treasurer of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. In part: “In fact, Jocko Conlan had called right after the Rose episode and put us onto the precedent you note. I believe I found a story by Tim Culhane about the episode. I had already, the day before, suspended Rose for 30 days and was therefore interested to see that my instinct had let me to where Frick had been in 1943. I had not known that this was the origin of the bow tie convention….” Accompanied by a 1989 secretarial letter from Giamatti’s office, noting that “before Mr. Giamatti’s untimely death, he dictated the following response to your letter … ‘It has not been a pleasant experience, but I am looking forward to all the rest that baseball has to offer.’” In fine condition, with mild handling wear.
