Sherman begs out of giving a toast “of which I have a holy horror.”

ALS signed “Wm. T. Sherman,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, February 15, 1887. Letter to a gentleman politely asking to removed from a toast. In part, “Please ask the Committee of arrangements to omit my name for a regular toast of which I have a holy horror - leaving the presiding office to call on me at some interval of the proceedings for simply a few…remarks of thanks…or in answer to some accidental subject suggested on the spot. By doing this you will place me under lasting obligation.” Ink notation at top from recipient reads, “ansd, Feb 18th, 1887” In fine condition, with some slight separations along mailing folds.
