Description

Final vice: Ruth lights up a stogie just months before his death from throat cancer

Terrific vintage glossy 10 x 8 photo of Ruth with his friend Emory Perry (at left) and an unidentified man, the reverse with a Dickinton Photo Service backstamp, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To my Pal Emory Peppey [evidently a playful variation on “Perry”] from Babe Ruth, 5-4-48.” Though dying of throat cancer—he would succumb only a few months later, on August 16—a lit cigar is plainly visible in Ruth’s right hand. Slightly irregular adhesion of ink (not affecting legibility), a few very subtle brushes to inscription, and scattered small creases (one lightly touching “th” of signature), otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
