In part: “Please accept my sincere thanks on behalf of the members of the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists, for your generous gift and continued support of our work. I have asked that you be sent the details of the wider and more extensive program we have been formulating during the last weeks and that you be kept informed of the progress of our campaign….” Einstein and fellow atomic scientist Leo Szilard set up the Emergency Committee in 1946 with the aims of raising awareness of the dangers of allowing atomic weapons to proliferate and promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
