In part: “Friends in Boston have very kindly arranged for Mrs. Washington and myself to take a trip lasting two or three months to Europe and these friends insist that we go. I dislike very much to leave the work at Tuskegee for so long a time, but I have been continuously at work now for eighteen years and I feel that perhaps a change of scenery and a little rest will result in my being even of more value to the work than I have been in the past, and this consideration I think has helped me to decide to make the trip…. I put the matter before our Executive Committee and they consent for me to go. I shall get the affairs of the institution in the best shape possible before leaving…. After spending a few weeks resting in Paris I plan to go to England where I shall make an effort during a portion of June and July to interest some friends in the institution….” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
