Description

“We finished the construction activity ... We are happy and proud”

ALS in French, one page on thin stock, 8 x 10.5, October 7, 1962. Schweitzer writes to Guy Barthélémy. In part (translated): “I thank you for your letter on the subject of the scouts from Roubaix who helped you and who it is suggested should come here to help us in Lambaréné next year…. I hope to have room to lodge them and the means to feed them. That is, through the building activity I have undertaken I hope to have 6 more rooms to provide next year…. I take it that you will have a place to live for those unfortunate Algerians. To my great astonishment I had not yet had news of a speech by de Gaulle who addressed them and assured them of his compassion…. We finished the construction activity on September 30, before the advent of the rain. We were happy and proud. I think of you often when I walk on the path you donated….” After signing, Schweitzer adds a postscript: “I learn that the man who wanted to persuade me to buy the property of my neighbor is in prison. I am pained. He was an adventurer, but I had the impression that he was an honest man who was trying to make himself useful.” In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds, light wrinkling and creases, chips and small tears to bottom edge, and a few minor blots to text. The writing is dark and clear throughout. R&R COA.
