Description

Loyalty: President Reagan writes to two sisters who befriended him as governor

TLS as president signed “Ronald,” one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, February 1, 1984. Reagan writes to the Sisco sisters, “Miss Sam” and “Miss Bertha.” In part: “I had never received your December letter or the beautiful leather pictures. Due to some mixup, your letter and the pictures had gotten into the regular mail flow which runs about half a million letters a month. Maybe the problem was that Helene is no longer the one you should address things to. She is now our Ambassador to Austria…. We now have [the pictures] and they are beautiful…. When we’re at the ranch we’ll try to get some pictures of us and your beautiful art work. You know our agreement is that your two beautiful leather engravings are for last Christmas and next Christmas. So we can say we’ve gotten our present a month late or eleven months early….” As recounted in the book A Life in Letters, the Sisco sisters befriended Reagan when they wrote to him in 1972 during his tenure as governor, seeking assistance for their mentally handicapped brother. Reagan directed them to state programs which would provide assistance, and once even sent his personal rocking chair and a check. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In very fine condition. R&R COA.
