Description

Prominent American politician (1782–1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. ALS signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.5, October 30, 1827. Calhoun writes to Mr. Southard. In full: “Dr. Stark of Norfolk, in favour of whose son, I some time since made application, informs me that there is now a vacancy in the Marine Corps, and request that I would again recall his application to your recollection. I can only add that if you deem his qualifications sufficient and circumstances will permit his appointment, I will be much gratified….” Accompanied by an antique portrait engraving. Intersecting folds (fold to first letter of signature; a few tiny edge separations) and mild handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
