His masterpiece, Leaves of Grass, led to his dismissal from a job as a clerk in the U. S. Department of Interior because of the book’s reputed scandalously explicit sexual references. Incredibly bold ink signature, “Walt Whitman, Camden NJ,” on an off-white 3.75 x 2.25 card, dated December 14, 1876.
