Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Delaware (1734–1817) who later served as Revolutionary War officer, delegate to the Continental Congress, and Governor of Pennsylvania. Manuscript DS, signed “Tho. M: Kean,” one page on vellum, 30 x 33, August 3, 1798. A deed for a real estate transaction between several individuals and the city of Philadelphia. The document has been signed by twenty individuals in addition to McKean, including the notable figures Hilary Baker (Mayor of Philadelphia, 1796–97), John Barclay (Mayor of Philadelphia, 1791–92), Robert Wharton (Mayor of Philadelphia 1798–99, 1806–07, 1823), Jonathan Bayard Smith (delegate to the Continental Congress), Gunning Bedford (one of two prominent cousins by that name, probably Gunning Bedford, Jr., delegate to the Constitutional Congress), Matthew Clarkson (Mayor of Philadelphia, 1792–96) and Michael Hillegas (Treasurer of the Continental Congress). Heavy intersecting folds, wrinkling and light soiling, and marginal hole (original to document), otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
