Pioneering American physician and patriot (1732–1815) who wrote the first article on animal diseases published in the United States and was a member of the family for whom Tufts University was named. Tufts writes to his son, Cotton, Jr. In part: “Mr. Shute brought me a very agreable [sic] present, a line from you—and the Latin, which you have sent me in good season—and am well pleased with it & with your improvement in writing. Part of your Latin is elegant—& the whole I think correct. I have not the time to add further but must conclude wishing you every accomplishment both of Body & Mind….” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (a few pinholes), scattered mild soiling and staining, a few stray ink marks, and light wrinkling and handling wear.
