Confederate military officer and politician (1818–1902) who replaced J. E. B. Stuart as Lee’s Chief of Cavalry following Stuart’s death on the battlefield. Hampton later served as governor and senator from South Carolina. Partly printed DS, one page, 8.75 x 3.5, January 27, 1868. A promissory note to himself in the amount of $3525.72. In addition to signing the front, Hampton has endorsed the reverse. Light vertical folds, a few small ink blots, and mild soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
