Description

“THE LORD FORBID!”: Amusing letter, signed with a “pig,” from master of nonsense EDWARD LEAR

British artist and writer (1812–1898) best known for his “nonsense” books, which feature his quirky drawings and amusing verse. Among his most timeless efforts are the poem “The Owl and the Pussycat,” as well as hundreds of limericks, a literary form he elevated to perfection. ALS signed “Edward,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, no date. Lear writes to Mrs. Hanley. In part: “From here I go to Winchester on Tuesday (when these good hosts flee into Scotland as I said), to my old friend of Knowsley days—James Hornby, now 2d Master of Winchester College…. So … I will write again, altho’ I feel you are saying to Mr. Hanley at this moment ‘The Lord forbid!—Does he think I have nothing to do but to read pages of stuff?’….” After signing and adding an amusing sketch of a piglike animal with curly tail in place of his last name, Lear adds a postscript: “The words ‘Lord forbid’ bring to my memory an odd reply of an American gentleman on board a P. & O. Steamer, as I, sitting opposite to him, asked ‘May I assist you to some bread & butter pudding Sir?’ He replied ‘The Lord forbid Sir! I was brought up on bread & butter pudding, & it’s as much as I can do to sit & look at one—far less could I eat it.’ O dear—it is time to go to church, an operation in villages I greatly fear to perform.” A few faint bends and a hint of subtle show-through, otherwise fine, bright condition.
