Among the most famous names in the Indian Wars, Carpenter is best-known as the Commander of Co. H, 10th Cavalry, the much celebrated “Buffalo Soldiers.” Carpenter received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his role in the Fall 1868 campaign against the Cheyenne, principally the Dog Soldiers, and he famously came to the rescue of Forsyth and his men at Beecher Island.
