Description

Soldier and politician (1752–1825) who fought at the Battles of Bunker Hill, Concord, and elsewhere during the Revolutionary War and was Governor of Massachusetts from 1816 to 1823. ALS signed “J. Brooks, Inspector,” one page both sides, 8 x 9.75, June 15, 1801. Brooks sends a report of revenues to supervisor Jonathan Jackson, enclosing “weekly returns of cash on account of the internal revenue for the four last weeks, & an amount of monies paid over to me by sundry collectors in the month of May. It is a most pleasing circumstance that the direct tax should be drawing so near to a close….” In fine condition overall, with light show-through of ink, small tape-repaired tears repairs to top edge, and light scattered toning and handling wear.
