Influential American author (1804–1864) best known for such classic novels as The Scarlet Letter and the House of Seven Gables. Partly printed DS, one page both sides, 8.25 x 13, October 22, 1856. A ship’s papers for the vessel Valleyfield, “lately arrived from the Port of New York” and laden with “twenty-six tons Logwood,” boldly signed “Nath. Hawthorne” as American Consul at the Port of Liverpool. The document retains its embossed paper seal. Intersecting folds (away from signature; a few small edge separations), light wrinkling, and a hint of mild scattered toning, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
