Description

Suspending a marshal from office

Partly printed DS, signed “U. S. Grant” as president, one page, 16.75 x 13.5, May 31, 1871. A document suspending Lewis E. Johnson as U. S. Marshal from South Carolina, to be replaced by Robert Wallace. Document tipped to sheet at central vertical fold, intersecting folds (marginal edge separations with early paper tape reinforcement to reverse), later handwritten secretarial ink cancellation across body of text, slight, neat marginal trimming, and a hint of mild handling wear, otherwise fine, bright condition. The clear, bold signature is completely unaffected by any faults. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
