Description

Once a catcher, but made his mark as a manager. After a stint at the helm of Pittsburgh, he assumed control of the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901 and continued for 50 years until retirement at the age of 88. Mack is best remembered as a dignified, scorecard-waving leader in a business suit, who won five World Series crowns and built two dynasties. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, American baseball Club of Philadelphia letterhead, June 30, 1941. Letter to Walter Briggs, Jr., Vice President of the Detroit Tigers concerning an upcoming series. In part, “Would like to arrange to play a doubleheader on Sunday and cancel the game of July 25th or the game you are scheduled to play here on September 18th. Will cancel the game that is satisfactory to you.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a couple pencil notations and an office stamp to top right.
