Academy Award–winning actor (1899–1957) best remembered for his performances in Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, and Treasure of the Sierra Madre, among other classic films. Vintage 7.25 x 10 book photo of Bogart playing chess, apparently taking hints from the book in his hand, boldly and quickly signed in the lower border in fountain pen. In real life, Bogart himself played tournament chess, one level below master level, and played games with people through the mail. It was reportedly his idea that Rick Blaine be portrayed as a chess player. After Casablanca, Bogart was playing a lot of correspondence chess with GIs overseas or in veterans hospitals in 1942. In 1943 he was visited by the FBI who prevented him from playing any more correspondence chess. The FBI was reading his mail and thought that the chess notation he was sending to Europe were secret codes. In fine condition, with a touch of trivial edge toning. PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
