American composer and pianist (1898–1937) who was one of the first musicians to attain resounding international success in both the popular and “serious” spheres. While he occupies a secure place among the most gifted songwriters in the history of music, his output extended far beyond the Broadway stage to include concerti and other large-scale concert works, chamber and instrumental music, and the landmark opera Porgy and Bess. Superb, boldly penned AMQS, three bars from Rhapsody In Blue on a cream 5 x 6.25 sheet, signed and inscribed in ink, “To Donald R. Sutphin, With best wishes, George Gershwin.” The inscription is situated so that it could be easily matted out if desired with ample margins to spare. Horizontal mailing fold just touching the “g” in “George,” otherwise very fine condition. A breathtaking example of this most desirable of Gershwin formats!
