Description

“It is cold - there is snow on the mesas and out beyond the house,” poetic letter from O’Keefe describing her surroundings

Artist known for her earlier spectacular color flower paintings and for her stark paintings of the Southwest. Boldly penned ALS signed “G,” four onionskin pages, 8.5 x 11, January 7, 1960. Poetic and painterly letter addressed to “Dear Anita,” most probably her sister. In part, “It is cold - there is snow on the mesas and out beyond the house - the trees are dark like pepper thrown on the white snow as a very pretty pattern - The moon is high and half full - the stars are very bright and clear in the night - I stood out here in the wind for a few moments - rubbing my head - and wondered if the moon shines over a warm world for you - and thinking my world very beautiful even if its cold. I have four dogs and two monstrous cats - they seem the largest cats I ever saw - two dogs - the chows I choose to have - The other two seem to choose me - They just came and decided to stay.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope address panel, addressed in O’Keefe’s hand. In fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
