SALAD DAYS: Extensively annotated draft for PAUL NEWMAN’S book detailing the history of his multimillion-dollar charity

Typescript draft of the book Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good by Paul Newman and his “Newman’s Own “partner, the distinguished writer A. E. Hotchner, comprising approximately 262 pages with extensive annotations throughout by both men. The book, an amusing and comprehensive history of the “Newman’s Own” line of food products that has generated hundreds of millions of dollars for charity since 1982, was originally published in 2003. The present item, evidently a late-stage prepublication draft, includes numerous cross outs, changes, and wholesale additions in ink and pencil by both Newman and Hotchner. Newman writes his own name a number of times, as in the handwritten addition to the first page of chapter one, “Paul Newman, known to his friends as ol’ PL….” In another, page-long addition, Newman details his short-lived notion of opening a restaurant, including a restaurateur’s observation that “‘[Waiters] go into the chit collection, get a chit for 49.50, guy pays the bill, nothing rung up on the cash register—They pocket the 49.50 and, which really frosted my ass, they get the tip as a bonus.’ The finger was removed from PL’s chest and so, apparently, was the idea of pursuing a restaurant….” In another passage, Newman discusses his children’s charity called Camp Hole in the Wall Gang, “the name taken from the legendary hide-out of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” A unique relic from the Hollywood legend who parlayed his fame into one of the greatest success stories in modern philanthropy! In fine condition. R&R COA.
