Confederate major general (1836–1906), known as “Fightin’ Joe,” who led his troops in vigorous opposition to Sherman during the Atlanta campaign. War-date DS, signed “J. Wheeler,” one page both sides, 7 x 11.75, March 25, 1865. Wheeler endorses a letter from Capt. Thomas S. Weston regarding the horses of Harrison’s Brigade, noting on the reverse (in another hand) that “I think these horses should be sent to some point off the Rail Road where forage can be obtained.” The letter also bears a handwritten endorsement by Henry B. McClellan. In good condition, with allover toning, intersecting folds, light show-through of ink, and small burn hole slightly touching “J” and “W.” The writing is otherwise dark and clear throughout. R&R COA.
