Original “Reportrait” of Vaughan by artist George Haessler, comprising a stippled-ink portrait with handwritten contributions from the singer, on an off-white 13.75 x 16.75 sheet, signed in red ink “Sarah Vaughan, Detroit, Friday ‘13’ 1959.” Vaughan comments on the meaning of the blues. In part: “I think the meaning of the blues is during the time of slavery when the people were out in the fields all day long working in the hot sun & the only way to find relief & start moaning those chant like melodies & between a prayer in fact those were the only two things they had to do…. People do have their problems now & they perhaps express it horn wise, singing wise, or whatever the instrument may be….” The sheet is also signed by Haessler at lower right. A few glue stains, otherwise fine condition. Striking for display! R&R COA.
