Description

Distinguished American baritone (1920–2002) best known for his stage performances in Porgy and Bess opposite his future wife Leontyne Price, and for his role as Joe, including a memorable performance of “Old Man River,” in the 1951 remake of the film Showboat. Original “Reportrait” of Warfield by artist George Haessler, comprising a stippled-ink portrait with extensive handwritten contributions from the singer, on an off-white 13.75 x 16.75 sheet, signed in red ink “William Warfield, Jan. 18, 1959, Detroit, Mich.” Warfield comments on concert singing, old American songs, and classical and popular music. Some excerpts: “All art, if it is sincerely expressed, is a way of life!… [Old American songs] are a part of our heritage and tradition. We can very well be proud of them, as they reflect the strength and vitality of our American society…. My immediate performing medium is in so-called ‘classical music.’ However, I’m very fond of jazz and popular music….” The sheet is also signed and dated 1959 by Haessler at lower left. In very good condition, with scattered light staining, a few wrinkles, and glue stains very faintly showing through margins from reverse (still lightly affixed at top edge to a piece of poster board). Striking for display! R&R COA.
