Description

Original “Reportrait” of Herman by artist George Haessler, comprising a stippled-ink portrait with extensive handwritten contributions from the musician, on an off-white 13.75 x 16.75 sheet, signed in red ink “Woody Herman, Detroit, Mich., Jan. 24 ’59.” Herman comments on dance bands, musical experimentation, and playing in schools. Some excerpts: “I think the future may be quite bright for the dance bands in as much as there is a great amount of interest among the college students…. There will always be musical experimentation—it is a healthy condition—it keeps music and musicians from becoming stagnant…. I enjoy playing in schools … whether it be a dance, or a jazz concert.” The sheet is also signed and dated by Haessler at the right edge. Light folds, a few faint stains and small edge tears, and minor brushes to a few words, otherwise fine condition. Striking for display! R&R COA.
