Description

Feeling his words: Yeats authorizes a Braille edition of his Selected Poems

Highly regarded Irish poet and playwright (1865–1939) recognized as one of the key figures in twentieth-century literature. The phrase “slouching toward Bethlehem” from his best-known poem, “The Second Coming,” has earned a place among the most powerful and recognizable metaphorical expressions in the English language. Scarce ALS signed “W. B. Yeats,” one page, 5 x 8, Riversdale, Dublin letterhead, March 22, 1933. Yeats writes to an unknown recipient. In full: “In reply to your letter (JR/PB) of March 2 I certainly give you permission, so far as I can give it, to publish my ‘Selected Poems’ in Braille for ‘the sole use & benefit of the blind.’ You must get the permission of my publishers Macmillan & Co.” In very good condition, with marginal paper loss at upper left affecting first word of greeting and repaired from reverse. The text and signature are otherwise clear, dark and unaffected. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
