American artist and illustrator (1877–1960) best known for his iconic image of Uncle Sam saying “I Want You” on a World War I recruiting poster. Superb vintage oversized matte-finish 11 x 14 Phyfe photo of the artist hard at work on a woman’s portrait in his studio, signed and inscribed in fountain pen at lower right, “Peggy knows damn well who this is, but just to be nice I’ll sign in Monty F.” Writing somewhat indistinct (though fully legible) against dark background, and a tiny marginal corner bend, otherwise fine, spotless condition.
