Famed Italian tenor (1873–1921) whose unprecedented popularity, which extended well beyond the rarefied realm of opera, made him the first superstar of the recording era. Original pencil profile self-portrait sketch on an off-white 5.25 x 9.5 sheet of Hotel Statler letterhead, signed “Enrico Caruso, Detroit 1918.” The image bears numerous touch-ups in white artist’s medium, evidently in preparation for publication of the sketch in a newspaper. Matted and framed to an overall size of 12.25 x 16.75. In good condition, with touch-ups as noted, horizontal creases (one through face, one lightly touching a few letters of signature), and scattered wrinkling and soiling with a few stains.
