“ANOTHER INDICATION OF VANISHING AMERICA”: Grey pens an inflammatory letter protesting a gun control bill and proposing “a band of great old vigilantes to pack guns and carry nooses for these aliens”

ALS, one page, 6 x 8, personal letterhead, December 19, 1934. Grey writes a startling “open” letter (there is no recipient or greeting) or a statement expressly for publication regarding his vehement opposition to a bill related to gun control and “aliens.” In full: “The so-called Alco Bill is the most unconstitutinal, most un-American thing I have seen, even in this day of radical aspects. It is only another indication of vanishing America. I bitterly protest such a curtailing of my freedom, of my own way of protecting myself. I would never sanction such a bill, and I would never give up my guns. My great great grandfather was a friend of George Washington, a companion of Daniel Boone, and Wetzel. I have Indian blood in my veins. I will never give up one iota of my heritage or my liberty to foreigners, radicals, communists, or what not? What California needs is a band of the great old vigiliantes, to pack guns and carry nooses for these aliens who would destroy her glory.” In very fine condition. Oddly timely content! R&R COA.
